The Alchemy of Illness

Kat Duff. Paperback, Published 1994

From Kirkus Reviews, January 1, 1993: "From the sickbed of a woman of `mystical temperament': very personal, sometimes quirky, essays on illness, blending 20th-century psychology with holistic spirituality. Duff, a counselor in private practice in New Mexico, became ill in 1988 with chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS), an illness for which there is as yet no cure: The only remedy is a few years of rest. Because she has an illness that is poorly understood by medical science, Duff questions the Western approach to medicine and health and looks outside it for answers to her questions. Illness, she asserts, defies the rules of ordinary reality and shares in ``the hidden logic of dreams, fairy tales, and the spirit realms mystics and shamans describe.'' This is a world where Duff seems to be exceptionally comfortable. She finds deep significance in her own visions and dreams, and she draws analogies between illness and initiation rites, noting that each involves a loss and that each may result in a new wisdom, a new power. Some of her conclusions are extraordinary: A meeting with a shaman leads her to the idea that her own illness is somehow connected to her ancestors' unfair acquisition of Indian land in Minnesota generations ago. Less startling is the link Duff makes between the onset of her illness and her recollection of having been sexually abused as an infant and her subsequent work with this memory in therapy. Readers accustomed to more straightforward accounts may find Duff's musings difficult to accept; still, her insights into common attitudes toward illness, and into the changes wrought in an individual by illness, are often enlightening."

Osler's Web: Inside the Labyrinth of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Epidemic

Hillary Johnson. Hardcover, 1996; Paperback, 1997

Hardcover Edition   Paperback Edition
From Booklist , February 1, 1996, William Beatty: "This oddly titled book contains a vast amount of material on a questionable disease that swept across the country during the past decade. Johnson draws on many interviews and professional meetings to document clinical and research work on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and she knows well the medical and popular literature on and the media's dealings with her passionately disputed topic. Incline Village, Nevada, physicians Paul Cheney and Dan Peterson first identified CFS and treated hundreds of patients. Johnson documents the sneering opposition of both the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health to recognizing CFS as a genuine disease, the hands-off attitude toward it of several leading medical journals, and the obloquy many physicians heaped on it. Neither Cheney, Peterson, nor any other clinician or researcher could ever absolutely identify the cause of the syndrome, and many in the opposition firmly believed it to be a product of psychiatric disturbances. Johnson's exhaustive volume is a benchmark in the strange history of an even stranger illness."
Johnson's book is controversial because she supports the idea that CFS is caused by a virus and contagious. This view is not in the mainstream, even among CFS researchers. From what I've heard, the rest of the book seems solid.

Facing and Fighting Fatigue: A Practical Approach

Benjamin H. Natelson. Paperback or Hardcover, Published 1998

From Booklist, March 1, 1998, by William Beatty: "As a professor of neurosciences and director of the V.A.'s East Orange, N.J., Gulf War Research Center and the New Jersey Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Center, Natelson has clinical and research experience with a broad range of patients suffering from fatigue. He writes for the more than 10 percent of Americans who frequently suffer from it. Although he devotes much space to chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, the two major causes of fatigue, he also explores other possible causes, methods of avoiding all causes, and many treatments. He discusses stress and depression and emphasizes, above all, the need for a knowledgeable and sympathetic physician. Natelson's practical book deserves special credit for the observation that 'often the doctor has not realized that the job is not to cure but to help.'"

Review by tim (tlhaupt@netzero.net): A nice introduction to the conditions, possible causes and possible curative actions. His approach is a bit over-optimistic. His premise is that it can be cured, or at least it appears to be his over-arching premise. But the information in the book is good for us newbies.
