Edward J. Calabrese. Hardcover, Published 1991
|
Review by Booknews, Inc. , May 1, 1991: To date, environmental standards
address only the effects of individual, isolated pollutants, whereas
the issue for human health also involves exposures to complex mixtures
of environmental toxins. This volume presents the conceptual basis
for predicting responses to such complex mixtures, documentation illustrating
how the principles of rational toxicological prediction may be applied
to specific situations, and a wide range of both theoretical and practical
improvements in dealing with multiple chemical exposures."

Debra Lynn Dadd. Paperback, revised edition, Published 1992
|
Review: I have only read the original edition, from 1986. This book
is a clear and concise manual to cleaning up your home to make it
safer for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. Dadd goes through
each area (cleaning supplies, pesticides, laundry, etc), discusses
the dangers of commonly used supplies, and provides alternatives.
You won't find great detail on why certain things are unhealthy, the
chemistry involved, etc, but there are other books that cover those
aspects.

Lynn Lawson. Paperback, Published 1994
|
Midwest Book Review States: "Staying Well in
a Toxic World reveals how the toxicity of common chemicals in products
as diverse as carpeting, computers, and cosmetics affects our health.
Lynn Lawson reveals how studies by the EPA, the FDA, and countless
other agencies demonstrate the impact our polluted environment is
having on our well-being. She looks at numerous case studies in
which people who suffer from medical symptoms that cannot be relieved
by their doctors have regained their health be decreasing their
exposure to certain chemicals. Staying Well in a Toxic World is
filled with practical information about the little understood illnesses
caused by exposures to modern chemicals. Prior to the publication
of this pathbreaking book there has been little coherent information
for the increasing number of people afflicted by these often disabling
disorders."

Bonnye L. Matthews (Editor). Library Binding, Published
1998
|
|
Book Description: "In Part One of this work, medical experts
provide a comprehensive look at current research into the disease,
along with treatment strategies. Part Two examines the legal recourses
available to MCS sufferers, such as workers' compensation claims and
product liability suits. How the medical community has often worked
against MCS sufferers is the focus of Part Three, demonstrating that
medical opposition to the disease is unfounded."

Hilary Balmer, RN, Executive Research Director, Research, Advocacy

just finished devouring The Toxic Labyrinth. It is a source of information
and inspiration and most of all empowerment, not only to those persons
for whom environmentally and/or chemically induced illness or injury
has wrecked havoc, but to anyone who remains willing and able to continue
exploring the vast areas of human ill health that baffle conventional
medical wisdom...I truly believe that it should be compulsory reading

Stephen J. Barrett, Ronald E. Gots. Hardcover, Published
1998
|
|
Review: Although I have not read this particular book I am familiar
with the work of Barrett and Gots. Both men have ties to the chemical
industry and frequently speak out in its defense. Barrett and Gots
lead the opposition to MCS as a physiological disorder. Barrett is
the founder of QuackWatch.

Other books by Stephen J. Barrett:
'Alternative'
Healthcare: A Comprehensive Guide (with Jack Raso), hardcover,
1994. (Booknews says: "Briefly explores the vast array of treatments
and philosophies of alternative healthcare with a decidedly negative
bias. Raso's comments range from the logical and substantiated to
pure personal opinion.")
Chiropractic:
The Victim's Perspective (with George Magner & William T.
Jarvis), hardcover, 1995. (Booknews says: "The author [Magner]
is a disillusioned former chiropractic patient whose chronic back
pain worsened under a chiropractor's care... (Editor Barrett is a
longtime critic of alternative forms of health care.))"
A
Consumers Guide to Alternative Medicine: A Close Look at Homeopathy,
Acupuncture, Faith-Healing, and Other Unconventional Treatments
(with Kurt Butler), paperback, 1992.
Mystical
Diets: Paranormal, Spiritual, and Occult Nutrition Practices
(with Jack Raso), hardcover, 1993. (Booknews says: "Raso, a dietitian,
sets out to expose the pseudo-science and the profit motive behind
various nutrition schemes. There's plenty to debunk, of course, but
Raso's scattergun, these-guys-are-jerks attacks don't make a convincing
case for or against much of anything.")
Panic
in the Pantry: Facts & Fallacies About the Food You Buy (with
Elizabeth M. Whalen &Fredrick J. Stare), paperback (reissue of
1975 edition), 1992.
The
Vitamin Pushers: How the 'Health Food' Industry Is Selling America
a Bill of Goods (with Victor Herbert &Gabe Mirkin), hardcover,
1994. (Booknews says: "The authors, both MDs, present a comprehensive
picture of the health- food industry which, they charge, has amassed
huge fortunes by preying on the fears of uninformed consumers. Although
they devote a lengthy chapter to "Elaborate Marketing Schemes," they
ignore the most elaborate of all--the one by which MDs threaten to
gain the sole authority to prescribe vitamins, minerals, and other
'nutritional supplements.'") (William Beatty of Booklist says:
"'Having observed the health-food industry for many years, we consider
it a form of organized crime.' With this as their ruling belief, Barrett
and Herbert amass case studies, statistics, and reports to make an
overwhelming argument against the production, marketing, and use of
vitamin supplements and therapeutic health foods, scoring such current
useless or harmful fads (they say) as antioxidants and extra proteins
and vitamins for athletes. Well known for their battles against quackery,
Barrett and Herbert don't shrink from naming individuals and businesses--Adelle
Davis, Earl Mindell, and Kurt Donsbach, for example, and Enzymatic
Therapy, Shaklee, and Sunrider International, all of which are subjects
for dissection and exposure. In addition, Barrett and Herbert turn
the spotlight on such organizations as the Council for Responsible
Nutrition and the National Health Federation. Anyone who eats a balanced
diet has no need for supplements, they say: 'If humans needed to eat
pills for nutrition, pills would grow on trees.'")

Herman Staudenmayer. Hardcover, Published 1998
|
Review (based on reading a paper by Staudenmayer and participating
in discussions of his theories; I have not read this particular book):
Staudenmayer believes that MCS is psychologically based. Part of his
reasoning is based on the finding that a disproportionate number of
adults with MCS were abused as children. Others have discovered that
same correlation but without jumping to the conclusion that MCS must
therefore be in the patients' heads (in Staudenmayer's words, a fear
of the environment). I for one have advocated that childhood abuse,
especially sexual abuse, can lead to neurological and immunlogical
damage, including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and Multiple
Chemical Sensitivities. This is not the same as what Staudenmayer
proposes. He believes that low-levels of chemical toxins are not harmful
to anyone and that any symptoms resulting from low-level chemical
exposure are purely psychogenic and not physiological.

Robert Sampson, Patricia Hughes. Paperback, Published 1997
|
|
From the Author Promo: "After exhaustive attempts to heal themselves
through conventional methods, the authors, a doctor and a nurse, moved
beyond feeling victimized by physical symptoms. Instead, they learned
how to interpret their symptoms as communications from their bodies
about unexpressed emotions and various structures they had created
in their lives which no longer supported them."
I have not read this book. One of the reviews at Amazon suggests it
denies the reality of MCS whereas other reviews imply that the authors
believe in MCS but also look at emotional and spiritual factors holding
them back from healing.
